ACCESS info
We want to make The Secret City accessible to everyone.
Here is some useful information to help you plan your visit.
things to know before taking part
The Secret City is self-led. This means you can take part whenever you like during 7 August - 24 October.
You can take part alone or with friends. You could also consider joining one of our hosted visits (details below).
The Secret City is free and you don’t need a ticket
The Secret City is an outdoor, interactive experience. You will be expected to walk or travel to several locations around the City Centre: please wear comfortable clothing and shoes and take a brolly!
The Secret City works through a mobile website: you will need a mobile phone (with access to mobile data and a camera for scanning QR codes) and a pair of headphones to listen to a series of audio stories on the trail. You won’t need to download anything.
For full details on how it works visit How To Take Part.
You’ll need to use The Secret City Map to find your way around the trail. You can download it on our website from 5 August or pick up a printed version from City Central Library
You may wish to familiarise yourself with the route before arriving using the Map.
When you’ve got the Map you could also use Google Streetview here to plan your visit.
Travel information and nearest car parks are listed on the Getting Here page.
The experience is family-friendly and there are no mature themes or bad language.
If you are D/deaf or hard of hearing, a transcript of each audio section will be downloadable here (coming soon)
DURING THE SECRET CITY trail
The Secret City route is wheelchair accessible
The section of the route through the Potteries Shopping Centre (from Number Two marked on the map) is optional. Wheelchair users, or if the market is closed, might find it easier to take the alternative route around the outside of the Potteries Centre. This is marked on the map.
The route is largely downhill
The experience lasts from 40mins - 1 hour depending on how quickly you walk/travel around the trail
You can go at your own pace.
You can pause or rewind the audio pieces at at time if you need a rest or miss a bit.
There are lots of benches and places to sit on The Secret City route - particularly near Bethesda Gardens, Radio Stoke and Waterstones.
Accessible toilets and Changing Places are available nearby on the route at: Hanley Indoor Market and Hanley Bus Station.
If you can’t complete The Secret City in one go, you could choose to do it in sections - why not listen to one or two each time you are up Hanley?
HOSTED VISITS
We will be running hosted visits on Thursday 26 August at 1pm, 3pm & 6pm where you can turn up and be guided around the tour by an experience facilitator.
There will be no pressure to talk to anyone else but ideal if you want the security of a group.
Book your place on one of these by emailing potboilertheatre@gmail.com.
